Veterans Title for Pugh
Pudsey players were in the forefront of the action at the Leeds League Closed Championships event held at Richmond Hill on Saturday. Defending Veterans men’s champion Simon Pugh progressed to the men’s final with a win in the semi over Dewsbury’s Mark Land. Simon retained his title with a win over Ivan Lewis of Leeds Judean in the final.
In the men’s singles Simon Pugh was joined in the semi-finals by Pudsey player Chris Parker. Chris losing to Mark Land over four sets and Simon getting the better of Neil Harris in three sets. In the final Simon led 2-0 over Mark but could not convert his chances in the third leg and Mark eventually won 3-2.
Number one seeds Chris and Simon combined in the men’s doubles to take the title with victory over the number two seeds Land and Lewis. In a round robin Ladies event Pudsey’s Sandra Rider lifted the singles title.
In the junior boy’s Pudsey’s Ed Hollingsworth and Michael Parker finished second and third respectively.
In the handicap singles event for division four to six saw Ed winning a hard fought match 3-2 over Chris Cains having knocked out fellow Pudsey player Lynne Thompson in the semi-final.
In the third meeting on the day Mark Land got the better of Simon Pugh to take the handicap singles event for division one to three.
Linda Sanderson of Pudsey along with Mark Land failed to retain their handicap doubles as they lost in the final to father and son team of Phil and Tom Bell from Leeds Judean.
In the Leeds League this week Pudsey B had a hard fought win over Leeds Judean to win 6-4 with Chris Parker taking all three sets and two for Junior James Atkins and one from Doug Bartle. In division three Pudsey G eased any relegation worries with a 7-3 win over bottom of the table Acre farm, here Linda Sanderson taking all three. In division five a rare win for Pudsey J over Lawnswood 7-3, Gavin Morris winning three, Ellen Auty two and Bryn Gaines one.
