Girls Double at the Schools Individuals

Pudsey Juniors were in fine form while representing their schools at the West Yorkshire Schools individuals held on Thursday night at the Keighley Table Tennis centre. With Horsforth under16 girls Nicole Finn and Ellen Auty being the top two county juniors both girls reached the finals as expected. Nicole’s topspin and power getting the better of Ellen’s counter hitting over three ends. Both girls will go to the individual finals in Doncaster in April with Nicole in the under sixteen and Ellen in the under nineteen event.

The girls winning double on the night was completed by Pudsey player Shristi Ghosh from Lawnspark School who won the under eleven event. Shristi dropped the first end of the final but showed her strength and ability to come through to win 3-1.

It was so close in the under thirteen event for another Horsforth girl Sammy Parker who exceeded expectations in reaching the final. In the semi-final Sammy took two sets to nil lead over second seed Fion Myers from Bradford but it was soon 2-2. Sammy made a great start to the fifth going 5-1 up and held her nerve to win 11-8. In the final she made a great start taking the opening leg but lost out 3-1 to number one seed Kate Nixon.

Pudsey under eleven boy Joe Moss reached the semi-final without dropping an end where he faced Freddie Brown the number one seed. Joe struggling against the serve and lost the first end but fought back to level the match. Freddie re-established the lead but Joe battled back to take the fourth in 14-12, but lost out 11-8 in the fifth.

In the Leeds League this week the derby match between Pudsey I and Pudsey J in division five was a real battle as expected and a fair result of a draw was the outcome. The match saw the battle of the top two individual averages in the league Ellen Auty and John Grieves. In a end to end match with both players attacking all the way Ellen won 11-8 in the fifth after losing the first two sets.
