Pudsey Table Tennis the Dominant Force
Pudsey players dominated the Leeds League Closed Champion event held at Richmond Hill on Sunday. In a strong field in the men’s event Pudsey top players Simon Noutch and Richard Smith were joined in the Semi-finals by Simon Pugh. Richard accounted for Pugh in four ends. In a high class final the crowd was entertained with some thrilling backhands from Simon as he defended his trophy successfully.
In the Ladies event Joanna Roberts currently ranked in England’s top twenty came thru her group and defeated fellow Pudsey player Sandra Rider.
Simon Pugh in his first year in the veterans proved to be the class player as he became the first Pudsey player to lift this title. This event since the formation of the Pudsey club has been one that has escaped the Club. Pugh became a double winner lifting his second trophy combining with Richard Smith to take the men’s doubles title.
In the junior boy’s number one seed Pudsey’s James Atkins suffered a shock loss in the final to Leeds Judean Tom Bell. In the Junior Girls final Nicole Finn got the better of Ellen Auty 11-9 in the fifth end.
In the handicap singles event for Division 4-6 saw the final between team mates Nicole Finn and John Ainley. Nicole with two start proving too strong for John as she powered to a three nil win.
Linda Sanderson was the Pudsey queen of the doubles, picking up two titles when combining with Mark Land from Dewsbury. In the mixed doubles group they saw off number two seeds Roberts and Orange before overcoming number Simon Noutch and Nicole Finn in the Final. In the handicap doubles event despite giving Pudsey youngsters Reece Bell and Reuben Hainsworth six start Land and Sanderson came thru to win in three straight games. |
