Atkins Late Show
Pudsey Table Tennis Club growing academy of talented youngsters were in action at the Cliffedale Chandlers tournament in Grantham on Saturday. With six boys and two girls entered in various age categories and in two separate halls Pudsey coaches Granville Thornton and Peter Thompson were kept busy.
Top performer on the day was James Atkins who arrived late at the start of the day due to going to the wrong venue! In the cadet boy’s singles James from an unseeded position progressed comfortably through his group and through the rounds to the semi-final. Here he faced the No. 1 seed left handed Azarel Adebanjo from Essex and using strong back hand topspins he won three games to one.
In the final he faced the no.3 seed Jack Cleminson also from Essex. Having lost to Jack earlier on in the day in the junior event 16-14 in the fifth end James was up for revenge.
A close fought first game went 12-10 to James and when the second followed 11-3 it looked like going to be a comfortable victory. Cleminson had other ideas and came back to take the third end 11-2. In the fourth James got off to a great start wining both his serves and soon established a 9-4 lead. However Cleminson kept the pressure up and clawed the game back to 10-8. James was not to be denied hitting a forehand winner in a spectacular rally to lift his first cadet boy’s title.
