Title Race Wide Open
Ambitious Pudsey Table Tennis club who had won all their matches in the first weekend had a mixed weekend in the Senior Men’s British League in Grantham.
They faced Sunderland in the first match who had also won their opening 4 matches and headed Pudsey on sets. Pudsey soon established a 2-0 lead with wins for Chris Parker and David Smith and with Joanna Roberts also showing impressive form Pudsey ran out 6-2 winners.
In their second match against Barnt Green, the team found things tougher and found themselves 4-3 down going into the last match. The experienced Ray Rider winning the last game to go along with two from David and one from Joanna to earn a hard fought draw.
On Sunday morning they faced Glasgow Drumchapel and with Pudsey Number one David Smith leading the way Pudsey came out with a 6-2 victory. This was achieved with a brace of wins each for Smith, Roberts and Parker. In the afternoon Pudsey faced Yorkshire rivals Hull and found the Hull team determined to avenge there 5-3 defeat at the first weekend. Hull brought Pudsey’s unbeaten run to an end with a comprehensive 7-1 victory only Parker managing to pick up a game.
This leaves Pudsey back in second position now one point behind Sunderland but they have Sunderland left to play so the title race is still wide open.
In the FM Carr Cup the battle of the two unbeaten Pudsey teams from Division three went to the wire. The E team grabbing a 5-4 Victory with Nicola Smith three wins and fourteen year old Danny Beech two over the experienced F team. The turning point was Danny Beech’s 3-2 win over Sandra Rider coming back from a two game deficit.
